Ayurveda is the ancient holistic science of natural healing for long healthy living. It is based on the concept of three doshas or fundamental energies namely, Pitta, Vata, and Kapha; a combination of which leads to the framework of human body. Each of these energies is formed by five elements: Pitta from fire and water, Vata from space and air, and Kapha from water and Earth. Of these, the Kapha Dosha is responsible for fat, and therefore, is the common dosha found in high quantities in those who are obese or overweight. So, from the Ayurvedic viewpoint, one must alleviate Kapha in the body for burning fat and losing weight. Keeping this in mind, here are some weight loss tips from Ayurveda.
Avoid foods that match with the qualities of Kapha
One of the Ayurvedic principles is that like increases like. Kapha is marked by qualities such as wet, heavy, cold, sticky, fixed, and soft. Applying the principle to the diet, you can certainly find out and avoid those foods that tend to have these qualities of Kapha. From this perspective, it is clear that one should decrease the intake of fatty foods, meats, ice creams, and dairy; most of which are heavy, soft, sticky, and cold.
Have foods that are exactly opposite of the qualities of Kapha
One more Ayurvedic principle says that opposites decrease each other. Therefore, here too, you can use the Kapha qualities as the guide for selecting the right foods. For example, include hot spices such as ginger and cinnamon to reduce Kapha. Further, look for anti-Kapha tastes such as bitter and pungent; which surely help in burning fat.
Exercise more but without much strain
The qualities of Kapha such as dull, heavy, soft, cold, and fixed are all held void through exercising. So, the more you exercise, the greater is the rate of reduction of Kapha as well as fat in your body. However, although vigorous exercises are essential to reduce your body weight, it does not mean that they need to be extreme. It is very important to strike a good balance between over doing exercises and doing them less.
Avoid cold liquids after exercising
Most people consider drinking cold liquids as a post exercise diet. This is one of the main reasons why they do not achieve results even after performing vigorous exercises. The period after exercises is important because the body tries to boost the metabolic rate to burn more calories. So, if you have cold liquids during this period, the consumption will negate this great advantage that exercising confers.
Go for a massage therapy
Obese or overweight people should consider a strong massage with mild oils such as flax-seed oil. One of the famous Ayurvedic provisions for weight loss is the oil called Lavana Thailam that is used for massaging gently in upward strokes on the areas having extreme or unwanted fat deposits. After massaging, it must be kept for 15 minutes followed by a wash with warm water. This therapy needs to be done for three to six months for better results.
Well, comprehending the qualities of Kapha and adjusting your diet and exercise regime to reduce it, is the key to successful weight loss.
